Don't confuse Safety with Slavery! Part 1 of 2

The NYPD is criminal quota driven organization which has convinced the population of New York City that their 2nd amendment is obsolete so they can use intimidation and brute force to obtain money and power.

The NYPD sends rookie officers into minority neighborhoods and instructs them to violate the rights of young black men essential using them to finish off the training using unwilling participates who are often both terrorized and traumatized during these encounters.

If anyone tells you that slavery was a long time ago and that you should remember the holocaust and 9/11 instead, tell them to go fuck themselves and then direct them to my Youtube channel to be properly educated. Thank You

Facebook deleted my page because I was reaching to many people with the truth but I created a new one to expose these criminals and give this corrupt system some more hell.

Troy Davis case: Judge Mathis, Democracy NOW, Lawyer - We executed an innocent man

Interview with Deirdre O'Connor, Executive Director of Innocence Matters, who filed several amicus briefs in the Troy Davis case for the NAACP, the Innocence project and the Charles Hamilton Institute of Justice at Harvard University.

You wrote a brief in the case of Troy Davis. Can you give us a few details as to your involvement in the case?

I learnt about the case when I was a clinical teacher at Emory University Law School and I received an email requesting assistance in writing in a letter to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. That was in 2007. In the course of that, I requested information about the case and reviewed the entire record that was available – various transcripts and police reports and statements by witnesses – and I became convinced that Troy Davis was probably innocent. I met with him and the family and over the course of the years became quite concerned about the prospect of Troy being executed. I submitted several amicus briefs on behalf of different organizations, including the Innocence project, NAACP, and the Charles Hamilton Institute of Justice along with Innocence Matters at one point.

You met Mr. Davis personally. In your personally opinion, was he innocent?

I really do believe we have just executed an innocent man. Troy has been able to consistently hold the account of what happened. He was present that night. But he was not the person who antagonized the homeless man. He was not the person who was armed. And he was not the person who shot officer McPhail.

There were reports that one of the witnesses was possibly the “triggerman.” Do you have any information on that?

What happened in this particular case is that there is a homeless man named Larry Young, who was hanging out with his girlfriend in a parking lot near Burger King. They were drinking. They ran out of beer, so Larry Young went to a local liquor store to purchase beer. As he came out of the liquor store, he was confronted by Sylvester "Red" Coles, who was the alternative suspect. Red demanded Larry to give him his beer. When Larry Young refused, Red, who had the reputation in the neighbourhood of being a thug, threatened him. He followed him back to the Burger King parking lot. He said: “Listen, man, you don’t know me. I’ll shoot you.” And this is all over a bottle of beer. Troy Davis and another young man, D.D. Collins, were in the parking lot, observing what Red was doing but did not participate in it. They did not have any exchange with Larry Young and there were no words between them. Larry Young’s girlfriend at that time, Harriet Murray, observed all of this happening. Her initial statement to the police was: “I saw one man following Larry Young and threatening him. He said:”You don’t know me. I’ll shoot you.” Then he reached into his waistband. He pulled out a gun and he pistol-whipped Larry Young. And just then, because of the cries of Larry Young asking for help, officer McPhail, who was working off-duty at that Burger King parking lot, came around the corner and was shot. Only the person, who Harriet Murray saw with a gun, was Red Coles, not Troy Davis. Red Coles ran away and hid from the police and the next day he was scared that people were telling the police that he was the one who committed the crime. So he went and got his lawyer. And the lawyer and Red went into the police station and told the police that Troy Davis was there and that Troy Davis was the shooter. And from that moment forward the police were fixated on making a case against Troy Davis. They did not investigate Red Coles. He lied to them and said he didn’t have a gun. He later admitted he had a gun but conveniently lost it. And police never did anything to investigate Red Coles. They just said they built the case against Troy Davis. And the way they did it was they took the picture of Troy Davis, they flashed it all over the news for days. That same picture was put into the group of five other pictures and the witnesses were asked “Do you recognize the shooter?” That was the evidence against Troy Davis.

What are the safeguards to prevent miscarriages of justice in the US?

The US has a system set up so that there are “constitutional errors” that can be raised after trials to say that we should not have confidence in this verdict. So if the prosecutor withheld exculpatory evidence that would have helped show that the person charged was not guilty – that can be a constitutional error. It’s called a Brady violation. But, in this case, there is not constitutional error of actual innocence. Troy Davis case created a situation, which the court had to deal with a little bit differently than they had in the past. So they said: ok, we’ll go ahead and have this hearing but have to set a standard to determine how much proof of innocence there has to be before we can grant a new trial. And they went to a federal district court and they held a hearing and the judge there created a standard that was so high that it would be virtually impossible to meet the standard. He discounted all of the evidence that showed that Troy Davis was likely innocent and said: Listen, he can’t prove his innocence, so we’ll just leave it as it is. Once you are convicted, the presumption of innocence is gone, and now there is the presumption of guilt. They have a tremendous burden to be able to establish their innocence once they’ve been convicted, which makes it so important to get it right the first time.

What role do you think racism played in this case?

I think race played a significant role in this case. This happened in Savannah, Georgia, at a time when there were real issues with racial relationships. The reality is that black people are more likely to be convicted when they are accused of committing a crime against a white person and they are more likely to get the death penalty if they are accused of committing a crime against a white person. And the numbers bear that out. That demonstrates that race does have a role there. The other thing in this particular case, because it was a white police officer, which was being investigated by the same police force, is that there was a real emotional need for them to have somebody to punish for this. So that when Red Coles gave them a suspect in a way to secure conviction they went with that. If this had been a case of a middle-class white defendant then maybe more attention would have been paid to it earlier on. You wouldn’t expect a police department that’s acting with integrity not to investigate Red Coles. It’s just unheard of that they would have overlooked that critical aspect as this of this investigation.

How many of the cases like this are you aware of?

There’s been, I believe, 130 people right now who have been exonerated from death row. Some of those people have come within hours of execution. We can’t let this case end with Troy’s death. That’s a real tragedy for all of us that have the opportunity to study this case and get to know Troy and his family, to go through that last night and witness his death. But we cannot let this issue die with Troy. Red Coles involvement in the death of officer McPhail needs to be determined. It’s important for the American justice system and for the public to be able to have any confidence in the justice system that we examine this closely.

UPDATE: Nappy Roots Rapper -- The Cops Were RACIST ... And I'll Probably SUE!!!

Ex-Nappy Roots rapper R. Prophet says he was the victim of a RACIST BEATDOWN ... and tells TMZ he's thinking about suing the cops who tased him earlier this week.

According to TMZ reports:

Ex-Nappy Roots rapper R. Prophet says he was the victim of a RACIST BEATDOWN … and tells TMZ he’s thinking about suing the hell out of the cops who tased him earlier this week.

Prophet just called in to “TMZ Live” … and says he feels it was “definitely racial profiling” when cops in Kentucky approached a car he was riding in this weekend … and proceeded to beat the crap out of him.

The rapper says the driver of his car was arrested for DUI at a police checkpoint that night … and was taken to a nearby police station.

Prophet says he was left in the car … and while he was trying to figure out how to get home, an officer approached the parked vehicle and demanded the rapper step outside.

“[The officer] said , ‘Step out of the car sir,’ … so I stepped out of the car. Next thing I know I was getting handcuffed … and the officer pulls out … his little electrocuting gun, they call it a taser or whatever.”

The rapper tells TMZ he was beaten mercilessly for no reason.

Prophet says he had been drinking that night … but insists he didn’t do anything wrong at any point in the evening.

Brutality: Shady NYPD Kick And Pummel Afghanistan War Vet In The Face After He Visits Precinct To Retrieve Things For A Friend

Another day, another police beat down on an innocent black man.

35-year-old Dwight Edwards was already suffering from PTSD after suffering a brain injury and fractured eye socket from an IED blast while he was serving in Afghanistan with the Marines.

Now he’s suffering from depression stemming from a Jan. 2 incident where he says he visited the 103rd Precinct station in Queens to retrieve a friend’s belongings, only to be attacked by cops there. Having already checked himself into a hospital, he is now filing s lawsuit over the incident.

Via NYDaily News reports:

After a friend was arrested for urinating in public, Edwards went to the police stationhouse in Jamaica to pick up his pal’s cell phone and wallet. An unidentified officer near the front desk told Edwards, “Get the f— out of my precinct,” the suit states.

Edwards replied, “There’s no law in here,” which prompted the cop to shout, “What did you say?” and tackle him. Another officer allegedly kicked Edwards in the face three times, the suit states. “Who the f— do you think you are?” the kicker allegedly said.

The Marine veteran’s girlfriend was waiting for Edwards outside the stationhouse.

“He was yelling, ‘You kicked me in the face!’ ” Alicia Branford told the Daily News. “He said, ‘I served in the Marine Corps and this is how you treat people?’ ”

Edwards, who grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant but now lives in Florida, immediately went to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Brooklyn for treatment and reported the beatdown.

He has no criminal record, and he served in the Marine Reserves from 2003 to 2006.

“He walked into the precinct unscathed and came out beaten,” lawyer Joel Berger said Thursday after filing a lawsuit in Brooklyn Federal Court.

A spokesman for District Attorney Richard Brown said the allegations are under “active investigation” by prosecutors and the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau. A police spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

Edwards was interviewed by authorities last month and picked out one cop from a photo array, Berger said.

Brutality: Nappy Roots Rapper R.Prophet Catches Crazy 4/20 Beat Down From “Good Ol’ Boy” Kentucky Police!

According to TMZ reports:

Prophet was arrested Saturday for disorderly conduct and other stuff, and in the middle of the bust he screamed, “I’m R. Prophet!!!” But cops thought he was proclaiming, “I’m a prophet” … which made him look like a nutcase, and things went downhill quickly.

Kentucky State Police say they had to tase the ex-Nappy Roots rapper multiple times for resisting arrest … and again for kicking out the back window of a police cruiser. The photos tell the story of the struggle.

But Prophet tells TMZ, it’s all BS … he was fully cooperative and cops repeatedly tased him for no reason as he laid helpless on the ground and handcuffed, adding, “I felt they were doing me like a slave. I thought I was dead.” He also says when he was thrown in the back of the cruiser he was pepper sprayed and tased again.

Prophet says it got so bad in the car he thought they were going to drive him somewhere and kill him. In a panic, he says he gashed his head on the window.

The trooper who arrested Prophet tells TMZ, the rapper was highly intoxicated, walked directly into traffic and was a danger to himself and others.

Ultimately the police dash cam should reveal who is telling the truth in regards to whether or not R.Prophet is telling the truth. One thing that is painfully obvious is that homie got his butt WHOOPED!

Wisconsin Incarcerates More Black Men Than Any Other State In America

1 out of 8 black men in Wisconsin are in state prison or jail.

According to NPR:

A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that looked at the prison population there found that the state has the highest percentage of incarcerated black men in the country. About 1 in 8 black men of working age (13 percent) are in state prisons or jails. The national average is 6.7 percent. According to census figures, African-Americans make up 6.5 percent of the state’s population. Wisconsin also leads the nation in the percentage of Native men behind bars; 1 in 13 Indian men are incarcerated there.

Wisconsin, though? Really?

And Wisconsin’s lead on this count is pretty big: It beats the state with the next-highest rate of imprisoned black men by nearly 3 percentage points — a gap bigger than the total distance between the second- and 10th-place states. A big chunk of the state’s black male prison population comes from Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s biggest city. According to the researchers, more than half of all black men in their 30s and 40s had been incarcerated at some point. That means there’s a large population of men in the state’s biggest city who are essentially unemployable, which puts a huge drag on the economy — and a big reason Milwaukee is one of the poorest big cities in the country. (Milwaukee’s metro area also boasts one of the biggest gaps in incomes between blacks and whites.)

And Milwaukee’s poor felons are concentrated in the same neighborhoods: The study also found that almost two-thirds of Milwaukee County’s incarcerated black men come from the city’s six poorest ZIP codes.

“I do think that a lot of it has to do with sentencing policy,” said Jeanne Geraci, who runs the Benedict Center, a Milwaukee-based organization that advocates for community-based responses to criminal justice. Geraci said that the state has a much more aggressive stance to incarceration; Minnesota, which has similar demographics and crime rates, has a prison population half the size of Wisconsin’s prison population.

Stephen Lawrence: European Racism Same As U.S (Black People Disproportionately Targeted By UK Police)

Stephen Lawrence, a young black man from London was murdered in 1993 by a gang of racist white youths. At the time none of his murderers were arrested or convicted, leading to an investigation that concluded the police force were ‘institutionally racist.’ Lawrence’s case became well-known in the UK and it left a lasting legacy for those who sought justice against police racism.

The family of Stephen Lawrence is holding a memorial service on the 20th anniversary of their son’s murder. High profile figures have been paying their respects to a young man whose death had helped put the spotlight on racial inequality in Britain.

The Lawrence family had mounted a relentless campaign for many years to bring justice to those who were guilty of their son’s murder. Their activism had ended up challenging the police force’s discriminative behaviour towards blacks and ethnic minorities. But some activists believe that not enough is being done by the government.

A new report out today reveals that ethnic minorities in Britain are more likely to be subjected to stop and searches by the police than their white counterparts. The report found that during 1999-2000, the stop rate for black people was 4.9%. Ten years later the rate was 10.8% for every black person in Britain. White people on the other hand were stopped from 1.5% to 1.6% over the course of ten years. But this inequality spreads further into other parts of society.

Black & Muslim: Chaos Erupts During NY Subway Arrest

Chaos broke out on the New York subway on Monday when police arrested a Muslim teenager accused of threatening and making anti-semitic taunts towards a Jewish man.

When a pair of NYPD officers arrived to arrest Stephan Stowe, 17, in Brooklyn they had trouble detaining him and the platform filled with an angry mob, loudly shouting at police and filming the arrest on cellphones.

Police then wrestled 22-year-woman Sheniqua Joseph to the ground after she got involved in the incident. She has been charged with disorderly conduct while Stowe was arraigned for hate crimes.

As police tried to arrest Stowe inside the empty subway car an angry crowd gathered, shouting at the officers.

As the policemen radioed for back-up, the group of passengers continued to yell and film the incident on cell phones.

Sheniqua Joseph, 22, appears to be warned a number times by officers but in the fourth minute of the video she is also arrested.

The woman is slammed against the subway wall and is eventually subdued.

She has been charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Stowe was arraigned on eight charges. These include grand larceny, which was charged as a hate crime, resisting arrest and harassment.

Florida Sergeant Fired for Using Trayvon Hoodie Shooting Targets, Defends Himself in YouTube Video

A police sergeant with the Port Canaveral Police Department has been fired after it was discovered he was conducting practice with targets resembling Trayvon Martin wearing a hoodie.

According to the Orlando Sentinel and other media reports on Sunday morning, Sgt. Ron King of the Port Canaveral police department, http://youtu.be/oonckYOhhy4 who has been a firearms instructor and veteran of the police force for two years, was fired on Friday from his job. King offered a resemblance of deceased Trayvon Martin to be utilized for other officers' target practice. The incident became public following an internal investigation which led to the firing of King.

The investigation found that the target King offered for the officers' target practice the first week of last month was a figure which wore a hoodie -- similar to the apparel worn by Trayvon Martin when he was walking through the gated-community in Florida and was killed by George Zimmerman.

Ron King's response

Though King denied in a YouTube video presentation that the Trayvon-similar target was not to be used for shooting, the interim Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer John Walsh quickly and publicly apologized to the family of Trayvon Martin on Saturday. Furthermore, Walsh referred to King's actions as unacceptable, unprofessional, and insensitive. The current chief also said that whether King's actions were via hatred or stupidity, neither is tolerated in the police force.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney representing Trayvon's parents, issued a statement condemning the target.

"Using a dead child's image as target practice is reprehensible," Crump said.

The Trayvon target, which features a bull's eye over his heart, a package of Skittles in his pocket and a beverage can in his right hand, is sold online.

The night he was killed, Trayvon was on the way back to a relative's home from a convenience store, where he had bought the candy and a nonalcoholic drink. He wore a hoodie, inspiring protesters to also wear hoodies as they demanded Zimmerman's arrest.

King has a week to appeal his termination. In the video, he said another sergeant complained about the target and had a "political agenda" for doing so.

On his LinkedIn page, King describes himself as night-shift watch commander for the Port Canaveral Police Department and a firearms and personal-safety consultant.

Before joining the Port Canaveral force, King worked as a Melbourne police officer for nearly 22 years. He was a lieutenant when he left in November 2006, according to LinkedIn.

Justice for Kendrick Kj Johnson: Look how history is repeating itself in 2013!

His name is Kendrick Kj Johnson he was beaten to death at his High School here in Valdosta Ga the police is covering up his story by saying there was no foul play but clearly you can see its a lie. They have yet to give the Johnson/Tooley family any answers. Im only asking for a minute of your time to plz share his story we need all the support we can get. Please support the Kendrick Kj Johnson movement.

This handsome young man was found deceased inside of a stack of rolled mats…in his school gym.

Hmmmmm…

Weird enough for you yet?

No?

Ok…Lemme give you the rest of the story…

January 10th started off as any other day in the Johnson home.

Kendrick arrived at his Lowndes High School with other students, ready to mark the day with knowledge, flirting, and fun…

But at some point during the third and fourth block, Kendrick somehow disappeared.

Apparently no one noticed that Kendrick was missing for the rest of the day.

No teacher.

No student.

Because no one noticed Kendrick’s absence until his father became worried that his child hadn’t returned home.

Kendrick’s father, Kenneth Johnson reported him missing to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department that evening.

On Friday morning, Jan. 11, janitors at Lowndes High School found Kendrick…

He was upside down in the mat and is believed to have passed out due to the blood flow to his head for an extended period of time, which could ultimately lead to a stroke or heart failure, the report says.

Officers say that during the investigation, they learned that Kendrick Johnson went into the gymnasium and appears to have climbed on top of the mats which were standing upright. At some point Kendrick Johnson either reached into the center of one of the rolled mats or fell into the center opening of the mat and became lodged. Investigators found no signs of a struggle having taken place. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office have and will continue to interview students and friends who may be able to provide information.

This is where the family of Kendrick says that things take a turn.

Kenneth Johnson, a local television news station that he believes his son was murdered.

“I want to express how did my son go missing during school hours in broad daylight? We know our son was murdered while he was at Lowndes High School. We do know that,” Johnson told WALB.

In Johnson’s case, the medical examiner’s office is also running toxicology tests, which can take weeks to complete, before determining the exact cause of death. The sheriff said he does not expect to see a full report on the cause of death for at least a month.

Anastasia Roe, the teen’s aunt, said her nephew was a good student who ran track and played football. She said he was the life of the party, but reserved when he met new people.

She said information that the family received from the school and the sheriff’s office about how the teen was found was inconsistent, and that lead to some in the community to ask questions.

“First we heard he was on the floor near the mat, then we hear he was wrapped in the mat,” she said. “It’s suspicious.”

Authorities began their investigation as Lowndes High students texted and posted on Facebook regarding the death. For a period, no one could enter or leave Lowndes High. Numerous parents arrived to pick up their children. Classes continued throughout Friday and parents were eventually allowed inside to pick up their children.

Sheriff’s and GBI investigators initially worked the scene as a suspected homicide. The sheriff’s office and Lowndes County School System issued a statement of suspecting no foul play by Friday night.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine asks that anyone with information about this, or any other incident contact the Sheriff’s Office, (229) 671-2950; or on line at http://www.lowndessheriff.com. Anonymous tips can be left at (229) 671-2985.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I’ve heard of some odd death scenes…

Hell, one of my favorite shows is 1000 Ways To Die.

But this is an odd one.

The ‘fell into the floor mats’ story is plausible…

But fishy nonetheless…

Imagine being in high school as a popular track star, basketball teammate, and football player.

Is it possible to just disappear during school hours without being noticed?

Let me ask you: Was Kendrick Johnson murdered????

Dr. Boyce Watkins: How Prison Killed My Older Brother

Dr. Boyce Watkins talks about his brother who went to prison

Police Sergeant Fired After Bringing Trayvon Martin Shooting Targets To Firearm Training Session

According to ABC News:

A Florida police sergeant was fired for allegedly bringing Trayvon Martin shooting targets he purchased on the Internet to a firearms training session. Sgt. Ron King, who had been with the Cape Canaveral Port Authority since January 2011, was fired Thursday, authorities said.
On April 4, when two fellow cops discovered King intended to use the Trayvon Martin shooting targets in their weapons exercise, they told him “they didn’t think it was appropriate,” said John Walsh, CEO of the Cape Canaveral Port Authority. The next day, he said the officers informed the Port Authority Police Chief, who called in internal affairs. Authorities declined to say whether any of the targets were used.

“We want to apologize to the community and the family of Trayvon Martin and don’t feel that this is tolerable or acceptable in any level. It’s something that we’d never want the Port Authority to be involved in and we truly apologize to the families for the pain that they even had to hear about something like this and had to relive their son’s death again,” Walsh said.

The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: "Final Escape" (1964)

A spoilt rich woman goes to prison and obviously wants to get out.

She hatches an escape plan, bribing the prison mortician, whose responsibilities include carting out the corpses of dead prisoners.

The plan is that she will climb into the coffin with the next dead prisoner and be buried alive, later the mortician will come and dig her out from the graveyard.

The plan goes well, but while laying waiting, buried in the coffin, she starts to wonder why the mortician is taking so long. She strikes a match inside the coffin and what she sees horrifies her!!

Is this the same paranoid "Feared for his safety" that police claim when they shoot unarmed suspects?

Racist Twitter Rant From FDNY 71-Year-Old Retiree…”Negroes Live In Homes Run By Mammy Hoes Who Pump Out Kids For Welfare Checks”

According to NY Post:

The former city fire dispatcher from Long Island writes a blog at FDNYRetiree.com that blazes with hatred of “Negroes,” “Mooslims” and “fags.” Edmund Schneider, 71, who left New York 23 years ago, collects a monthly city pension of $1,468.94. His blog is splashed with images of the American flag, FDNY and NYPD patches and 9/11.

Among his racist rants:

* “If you ACT like a n—–, you’re gonna be CALLED a n—–!” he warned in a February post accompanied by a photo of a black woman with watermelon rinds on her chest.

* “Negroes commit by FAR the bulk of the violent crime in the United States,” he wrote in March. “But why? Simple, really, it’ something called a ‘FAMILY,’ — which is foreign to the average Negro, who lives in a household run by a ‘mammy ho’ who pumps out kids like a bunny for welfare checks.”

* “Politically correct imbeciles decided to grant the ‘mostly female Negro’ 911 dispatchers virtually lateral access to the ‘mostly white male’ FDNY dispatch force. And they destroyed it!” he wrote.

* Of First Lady Michelle Obama, he snipes, “The Mooch sure as hell has a big, fat a*s! And it’s black, too.” He also calls President Obama a “black bastard” and “the anti-Christ.”

* Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton (a “lessie”) “flipped on f@gs” to support “fruitcake marriage.”

* “Don’t Trust a Single Damned Muslim!” he titled another diatribe.

Reached yesterday at his home in Venice, Fla., Schneider defended his views. “Offensive is in the eye of the beholder. It’s not hate speech. It’s all opinion, and it’s all based on fact,” he said. “I’m not a racist. Some of my best friends in the Fire Department were black, and some of them were over at my house.”

An FDNY official contacted him on Friday after The Post asked about him. “The vile and despicable ramblings on this Web site are clearly the work of a sick individual with way too much time on his hands,” an FDNY spokesman said. “We have referred the matter to the Law Department.”

Segregated Prom Sees Black Students Escorted Out by Police

"This seems hard to believe in 2013, but students at Wilcox County High School in Georgia have long held segregated proms — one for blacks and one for whites. This year a group of black and white teens who have been friends for years are fighting for a fully integrated prom. But it hasn't been easy."*

Wilcox County High School in Georgia has a segregated prom in 2013- one for whites and one for non-whites. How is this still going on? How is this school still getting away with institutionalized racism? Cnek Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Ben Mankiewicz discuss.

Too Late? Scottsboro Boys To Be Pardoned Posthumously After Spending Years Locked Up, Accused Of Sex Assault On Shady White Girls

Alabama is attempting to revise it’s racist past by taking steps to posthumously pardon one of the most publicized cases of false imprisonment in black history.

Via ABCNews reports:

Nine black teens who were wrongly convicted of rape more than 80 years ago are set to receive posthumous pardons.

The nine “Scottsboro Boys” were accused of gang rape by two white women in Alabama in the early 1930s. With the exception of one boy, all were convicted by white juries and sentenced to death row. The allegations, however, were false. While they were eventually freed without executions, the boys languished for years in prison, missing out on opportunities for education, jobs, marriage and life in general. The last of the men passed away nearly 25 years ago.

Now, Alabama is trying to right past racial injustices and improve its reputation. The state House and Senate have voted unanimously in favor of a bill to posthumously pardon the teens. Governor Robert Bentley is expected to sign it.

While civil rights organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) lauded the decision, they said that racial tensions still exist, and that there is more work to do.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous pointed out to the Associated Press that Alabama is currently involved in a Supreme Court case involving whether a section of the Voting Rights Act should be upheld.

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 requires places with a history of discrimination, including Shelby County, Alabama, to obtain preclearance before altering their voting laws. Shelby County says the law unfairly punishes them for past injustices, but voter rights groups, including the NAACP and a group of Latino advocacy organizations, say voters who don’t speak English as a first language continue to be discriminated against, and that voter-roll purges unfairly target minorities.

“Unfortunately,” Jealous told the AP, “Alabama still needs to consider its present.”

This is one of the most infamous cases in AMERICA’s shady history — forget about Alabama. Of the nine men falsely accused of forcing sex on two train-riding skanky white girls (who were definitely spreading legs for white men) some of them were not even physically able to have sex at all! They had their names torn down and the shame of being attached to this case. It’s great that they’re being pardoned now — but Alabama owes them and their families more than just a pardon.

And we agree with Ben Jealous — there are plenty of steps the state needs to take to address racism HERE and NOW!

Family of Rekia Boyd Awarded $4.5 Million After She Was Slain By Police

Almost a year after 22-year-old Rekia Boyd (pictured) was gunned down on Chicago’s West Side by Chicago detective Dante Servin, the Chicago City Council Wednesday approved a $4.5 million settlement with the family, reports ABC News.

Boyd was an innocent bystander in Chicago’s Douglas Park around 1:00 a.m. on March 21, 2012 when Servin, responding to a disturbance call, arrived on the scene. The officer exchanged words with Antonio Cross, who was also in the park. After turning away, Servin, who was in his car, claims he saw Cross pull out a gun. It was actually his cell phone, but it was too late.

Servin fired five shots “blindly” over his shoulder, shooting Cross in his thumb and striking Boyd in the head. She died the next day at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Cross was charged with aggravated assault against Servin. The officer did not appear for the court date, so charges were dropped.

“We didn’t even get a damn I’m sorry yet. We’re still waiting,” said Boyd’s brother, Martinez Sutton.

Sutton and Darian Boyd, Rekia’s other older brother said that the family not only had not received condolences from the Chicago Police Department, but that Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy called the death ”justified” in a press conference following the shooting.

“We’ve made multiple attempts to contact them and even asked news stations to please contact them since they won’t talk to us,” said Darian Boyd to Truth-Out at the time, adding, “It just makes it that much harder to deal with the grief.”

Though Boyd’s family will receive $4.5 million as part of a wrongful death settlement, they say justice has in no way been served until or unless Servin is criminally charged  in the shooting death.

ABC reports more on the settlement and continuing investigation below:

“Superintendent (Garry) McCarthy and State’s Attorney (Anita) Alvarez should accelerate their investigation and bring charges,” said Bishop Tavis Grant. “It’s very clear this woman was murdered.”

Detective Servin was placed on administrative duty after the shooting where he remains today.

The Independent Police Review Authority in November turned over its report on the shooting to the State’s Attorney office where it currently remains.

[...]

“This has been a farce all along,” said Benjamin Starks, Cross’ attorney. “They knew they were not going to go forward, but they kept up the charade.”

After approving another multi-million dollar settlement involving police conduct, some council members wonder aloud about discipline.

“There are certain mistakes that people make and they do lose their jobs for them. There are consequences for those mistakes,” said Alderman Howard Brookins.

The financial settlement in the Boyd death came quickly, but the possible criminal prosecution of a police officer is not moving at the same speed.

The State’s Attorney’s office says that its review is ongoing and beyond that no comment on when or whether charges may come.

For Rekia Boyd’s family, her death is much more than a “mistake”:

“Her death certificate says killed by police,” said Sutton, “but I feel like my sister was murdered.”

Boyd was gunned down less than one month after 17-year-old Trayvon Martinwas killed by  neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. As that case lingers on in the legal system, Zimmerman continues to elude consequences for his crime.

Ice-T Defends His Gun Rights "It's To Protect Ourselves From The Police"

Speaking with Channel 4 London's Krishnan Guru-Murthy in the hours after the Colorado news broke, the self-described "Godfather of Gangsta Rap" vehemently denied a connection between gun rights and the Aurora murders.

"It's legal in the United States," the rapper said. "The right to bear arms is because that's the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It's to protect yourself from the police."

"And do you see any link between that and this sort of instance?" Guru-Murthy challenged.

"No. Not really," Ice-T responded. "If somebody wants to kill people, they don't need a gun to do it."

"Makes it easier though, doesn't it?" the host pushed back.

"Not really. You can strap explosives on your body. They do that all the time."

R.I.P Damon Abraham: Tasered 4 Times While Handcuffed & Witnesses Claim He Was Beaten To Death By LA Police

Baldwin police are now saying Mr. Abraham "may have been on narcotics" which may be the reason for his death. However, witnesses and family members are consistently telling the same story of a brutal beating and several Taser shots. "How can [you] receive a broken jar closed eye and head injuries from a Taser," Jajuan "Fish" Abraham, Damon's nephew, said via Facebook. "And let's not forget [they dragged him] to the car like you drag a dead dog with a collar," he said. Mr. Abraham leaves behind a son and daughter who will now grow up without a father. Our thoughts are with the Abraham family.

Cop Punches Woman In Face During Arrest For Riding A Bike

From the video captured by two Millville Police car dashboard cameras, emerge two very different versions of what happened in the pre-dawn hours of February 3, 2008.

The just-released video is at the center of a lawsuit in which Sheila Stevenson, 42, claims she became the victim of excessive force, after then-Millville Police Officer Carlo Drogo pulled her over for illegally riding her bicycle on a sidewalk.

In the course of trying to handcuff Stevenson, the video shows Drogo as he sprays himself in the face with pepper spray and she appears to push him. Drogo then appears to knock Stevenson to the ground to subdue her. Drogo is seen, seemingly doubled over in pain, as other officers arrive.

I am not doing nothing, Stevenson screamed on the video.

Put your hands behind your back, one of the other officers ordered.

Can you not do this? Im not doing nothing! Im not doing nothing, she wailed.

Seconds later, Drogo approaches Stevenson again and appears to punch her four times.

Why are you hitting me? Youre hitting me! Why are you hitting me? Stevenson cried out. Why did you hit me and Im handcuffed?

Stevenson was eventually led away by officers and put into a police cruiser. She was later convicted of resisting arrest.

Stevensons civil suit, filed in Cumberland County Superior Court in December, names Drogo, other Millville Police officers and the city of Millville as defendants.

Stevensons lawyer would not comment on the case, nor would Millvilles Police chief, citing pending litigation.

Drogo resigned from the police department in October for undisclosed reasons. He would not talk with NBC 10 News on-camera, but issued a statement in which he stood by his actions and called Stevensons allegations a distortion of the facts.

Drogo also insisted the arrest was lawful and described Stevensons lawsuit as frivolous.

Meanwhile, theres now a warrant out for Stevensons arrest on drug possession charges, stemming from her encounter with police that was caught on camera.

Racism, Corruption & Police Brutality in the UK

The failure to properly investigate the death of Stephen Lawrence, a black student who was killed in London in 1993, has left the UK with a police force that has been branded as institutionally racist.

The British police failure to investigate the issue led to an inquiry in 1998 which concluded that the investigation into Stephen's death was marked by professional incompetence and institutional racism in the police force.

Evidence before the inquiry stated that if the color of the victim and the attackers was reversed, the police would have acted very differently.

Not much has changed since then, and it may even be growing worse. Stop and search policies are direct more than ever towards black Britons and less than 10% of the UK police are of ethnic background.

Recently researchers have found that black people are 30 times more likely to be stopped and searched than their white citizens. This edition of A Simple Question asks: is the British police force racist?
