Ohio Man Who Claimed Pocket Bible Saved Him From Shooting

An Ohio man who made national headlines and appeared on several morning TV shows with his bible survival story actually STAGED the attack against him that he blamed on young black men.
According to NY Daily News reports:
The operator working for the Dayton, Ohio transit system lied when he told cops he was attacked, shot, stabbed and robbed by three black teens in February, police said Wednesday.
Rickey Wagoner, 49, even told cops that two of the bullets struck a copy of “The Message,” a contemporary take on the New Testament, that the driver had stuffed into a chest pocket.
But cops now think Wagoner staged the attack, shooting himself in the arm and placing the Bible-like book on the asphalt before pumping two slugs into it.
The stab wounds on his arms were not the defensive wounds expected of someone fighting off an attacker, cops said at a news conference Wednesday, but rather “hesitation wounds” inflicted by a person stabbing themselves, the Dayton Daily News reported.
Wagoner originally told cops he’d been attacked around 5:20 a.m. on February 24 by three black teens in hoodies, their faces covered by bandanas, after his trolley had an electrical problem and broke down.
“Shoot a polar bear … if you want to be all the way in the club,” he told police one teen told another during the attack, which he believed to be a gang initiation.
Teens used “polar bear” as slang for white person, prompting the FBI to investigate the alleged attack as a hate crime.
But further investigation turned up only Wagoner’s DNA and blood at the scene, despite his claim that he’d wrestled away the knife and stabbed one of his attackers. And a blue bandana found at the scene turned up only dog hairs, police said.
Surveillance video from the bus catches the sound of five different gunshots, though Wagoner said only three were fired. One is fired, then several seconds elapse before four shots in rapid succession are let off. A groaning and screaming Wagoner is heard on the surveillance tape, but cops said on the 911 call, the 320-pound man did not appear winded, despite his claims that he’d fought for his life and run some 200 or 300 feet on the dark Dayton street, the Dayton Daily News reported.
Police have not charged Wagoner with a crime, however he is out of a job:
The city’s Regional Transit Authority began the process of firing Wagoner, a 10-year veteran driver with a sparkling record, Wednesday after learning of the allegations.
This incident has been tremendously upsetting to our customers, RTA employes and to the Greater Dayton Community,” executive director Mark Donaghy said in a statement Wednesday. “All of us at RTA are angry at the thought that an employee would allegedly mislead the police, the public and us and use ugly racial stereotypes in doing so. There was nothing in Mr. Wagoner’s employment record with RTA that suggested he might be capable of this alleged behavior. I can’t emphasize how angry and appalled we are.”
