San Diego Police Pay $225,000 To 16-Year-Old Black Mom After Taking Away Newborn For No Reason

Via The Grio reports:

In 2008, San Diego police officers claimed teen mom Johnneisha Kemper was “unfit” to raise her newborn and took the child from her.

Now, the city will shell out $225,000 to Kemper to settle a civil suit, according to KSND-TV.

Kemper was 16 when she gave birth and filed a civil lawsuit against “San Diego County, the social workers involved, city of San Diego and the police officers who initially took the baby,” the station reports.

Kemper got into a dispute with her mother following her release from the hospital after giving birth, which resulted in her being locked out of her mother’s house with her newborn baby “locked inside.”

She called police to help resolve the dispute, but when officers arrived, they instead took her baby away. According to the now-settled lawsuit, the officers took the child “even though there was no immediate threat to the child.”

Kemper’s daughter Nyhanna is now 6 and living with adoptive parents. Shawn McMillan, Kemper’s attorney, told KSND-TV there’s nothing that can be done to reunite mother and daughter: “It’s over.”

Coroner: Handcuffed Black Youth "Killed" Himself

A coroner’s report obtained exclusively by NBC News directly contradicts the police version of how a 22-year-old black man died in the back seat of a Louisiana police cruiser earlier this year -- but still says the man, whose hands were cuffed behind his back, shot himself. In a press release issued March 3, the day he died, the Louisiana State Police said Victor White III apparently shot himself in an Iberia Parish police car. According to the police statement, White had his hands cuffed behind his back--when he shot himself in the back.

Dog Killed By Cops During Raid On Michigan House, The WRONG House

"Authorities who went to the wrong house in search of a wanted fugitive and shot a beloved family pet are refusing to take responsibility for their actions, according to a Michigan attorney who has filed a lawsuit against them.

"These officers came into the wrong house, shot this dog, told the owners they would take care of it and then never returned their calls," Royal Oak attorney Chris Olson told The Huffington Post.

Olson is representing Erica Moreno and Katti Putnam. The couple's 15-year-old mixed breed dog, Clohe, was shot in the face during the mistaken police raid, Olson said."

In Historic Police Brutality Case, Family of Homeless Denver Pastor Killed in Custody Awarded $4.6M

http://democracynow.org - As Denver faces a string of police brutality cases, a federal jury has awarded a historic $4.6 million in damages to the family of a homeless preacher killed while he was in the booking area of the Denver jail.

Marvin Booker died after he was grabbed and then piled on by a team of officers who handcuffed him, put him in a chokehold and tasered him. The coroner ruled his death a homicide, but prosecutors declined to charge the deputies involved, and Denver Sheriff Department officials never disciplined them, saying Booker could have harmed someone and that force was needed to restrain him.

The case highlights a history of alleged misconduct by the police department, and has added momentum to calls for reform both locally and nationwide in the aftermath of calls for justice in the killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown by an officer in Ferguson.

We are joined by two guests: Rev. Reginald Holmes, pastor of the New Covenant Christian Church Alpha and Omega Ministries, who has been a leading voice calling for law enforcement accountability, and Susan Greene, editor of The Colorado Independent and longtime reporter formerly with The Denver Post.

Activists carry coffin of Michelle Cusseaux, killed by Phoenix police

Activists protesting the fatal shooting of a mentally ill woman by a Phoenix police sergeant last week carried her coffin to City Hall on Friday, demanding an independent investigation into her killing.

Michelle Cusseaux's family and other supporters paraded the 50-year-old woman's wooden casket through downtown Phoenix a day ahead of her funeral in what they said was a symbolic move to show they will not let her death pass without action.

"She can no longer speak, so we must do that for her," said the Rev. Jarrett Maupin, who helped lead the demonstration that also went to the U.S. Attorney's Office. "We are not giving up."

Phoenix police have launched two investigations into the Aug. 14 killing of Cusseaux, who died from a single gunshot wound after she threatened police with a claw hammer at the door of her apartment.

The officers had been serving an emergency court order to take the woman to a mental health facility.

Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia says the Maricopa County Attorney has been asked to review the department's own criminal investigation once it has been completed.

The department also is reviewing its procedures for mentally ill individuals and will bolster officer training, he says.

The Phoenix investigation comes amid continued protests in Ferguson, Missouri, over the police killing of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer.

Cusseaux, who is black, was shot by a veteran white police sergeant who has since been placed on administrative assignment.

A Phoenix police spokesman declined to comment on Friday's protest and said he could not confirm whether the woman's body was in the coffin.

Alexander Wilson, 15, Murdered by Arizona DPS

On Sunday, April 7th an unnamed Arizona Department of Public Safety officer murdered 16 year old Alexander Wilson on 35th Ave. & Camelback. The DPS officer pulled up behind Alexander Wilson's vehicle that was stopped at a gas station. The officer approached the car and shot Alexander in the eye with a shot gun, taking his life.
Mr. Alexander Wilson

The officers have changed their story 3 times, lying about where the officer was standing when they shot the boy. They accused him of trying to run the officer over with his car- yet the bullet was fired from the opposite direction that the car was moving.

There was an 18 year old boy in the car and witnessed the brutal murder. When his sister Alexis Wilson came to the scene, officers laughed in her face and would give her no information about her brother.

JUSTICE FOR ALEXANDER WILSON! Demand that the AZ DPS release the name of the officer, release the footage from the gas station and charge the officer with murder.
